About TCS

History--The Cycad Society (TCS) was started by Dr. Walter Harman at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1977, and many of the charter members are still with the society. The TCS Board of Directors met during the 5th International Conference on Cycad Biology (CYCAD 99) in Miami, FL, to discuss the reinvigoration of the society. Ever since 1999, the board has actively strived to improve the society and increase member benefits. Two of the most important benefits of TCS membership are the Cycad Newsletter and the Cycad Society Seedbank.

Member Involvement--The Cycad Society Board of Directors would like to get the members involved in the society, and one place to start is by contributing to the Cycad Newsletter. Over the past few months, we have added new sections to the newsletter, and there will be more to come in future issues. Below is a list of some of the sections for which we would welcome member input and contributions. Click the underlined sections to view examples.

If you have any photos, questions, or tips/tools to contribute, please send them to info@cycad.org. We will make every effort to get your material put into an issue of the newsletter.

Another way that members can get involved is by serving on a committee. Click here to see the existing standing committees, the open positions, and the committee responsibilities.

Cycad Newsletter: Journal of the Cycad Society--The TCS newsletter is "dedicated to the conservation of cycads through education and scientific research." These words appear on the front cover of every issue as a reminder of the society's mission. The newsletter is published four times a year, and a subscription is included in the membership dues.

In 2001, TCS appointed a new editor, Dr. Bart Schutzman, and the newsletter went to full-color. In 2010, the TCS Board of Directors voted to begin publishing original peer-reviewed scientific articles in the newsletter alongside the more traditional lay articles, changed the name of the publication from Cycad Newsletter: Publication of the Cycad Society to Cycad Newsletter: Journal of the Cycad Society, and established a TCS Journal Editorial Board to oversee the peer-review process.

Articles cover a wide range of topics; examples from recent issues include the following: "Fifty Years of Cycad Tissue Culture," by Knut Norstog; "Cycad Fun at the Fullerton Arboretum," by Glen Williams; "Cycas revoluta in Louisiana," by Garrie Landry; a series of articles on off-site preservation of cycads, by Terrence Walters, former Executive Director of the Montgomery Botanical Center; and "The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES): An Essential Tool for Cycad Conservation," by Julie Lyke of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

There are also regular columns and features, such as the president's message and the "Cycad Focus" column, in which a different cycad species is highlighted each issue.

Membership Brochure--We have created a new educational membership brochure that is available for members to give out at events. Feel free to contact our Membership Director, Larry Krauss (membership@cycad.org), to request copies of the brochure to hand out.

Cycad Society Seedbank--One of the most popular benefits of being a TCS member is the seedbank. Members have the opportunity to purchase small quantities of seeds of often rare cycad species at reasonable prices. Depending on the availability of seeds, interested members will receive seed lists a few times each year.

Correspondence regarding the Cycad Society Seedbank should be sent to:
